Vision Statement
New College has grown to see the importance of indypendent media to its mission
of “Promoting a Just, Sacred and Sustainable World.” The college
has agreed to build a broadcast theater and recording studio and to renew its
Media Studies curriculum and faculty. It has also agreed to host a research
institute where media makers learn to support new movement leadership.
The research institute, a Center for un-Authorized Repairs intends to work with
media makers and students to support new contexts for broadcast radio and independent
film.
The Institute will support Community Radio producers and indypendent film makers
• By archiving and digitizing legacy collections
• By supporting creative works, research and special programming
• By providing opportunities for networking, learning and exchange of
ideas
We are especially excited about expanding the frame of reference for movement
activists and media makers to include colonization and corporate domination.
The vital programs for the institute are:
• Supporting indigenous awareness and presence at New College and in indypendent
media
• Challenging corporate dominance
• Healing the trauma of war and nationalism
This new center will support research, publishing, broadcasting, and organizing
in collaboration with faculty, staff and students of the New College of California
and is a special project of the President’s office. The college will offer
in-kind donations to the center of access to equipment and facilities in exchange
for support the center provides to students and faculty.
